Learning Objective 6
There is a lot to be gained when moving to digital. We gain speed, convenience, accuracy, and the ability to share, copy, and spread information quickly. When we look at everything that has been gained over the past few decades, the level of output we can now achieve would probably blow the mind of our parents when they were our age. We are more productive than ever, but this also comes with some losses.
When we move something to digital, we lose part of the natural experience. A digital painting is not the same as a real painting. A Zoom call does not provide the same connection as an in-person interaction. A voice recording is not the same as hearing someone’s voice in real life. The digital version can be useful and practical, but it is still a representation of the original thing, not the thing itself.
Being part of this seminar made me more careful about the losses we experience when moving into the digital world. It made me realize that digital does not always mean better. We are now very dependent on technology, and sometimes it makes me think that we are losing part of our humanity. We need to be careful to remain connected to the real world when possible and keep what makes us different from machines.
